Step-by-step driving assessments and therapy support for people with disabilities.
At Drive On Therapy, we make the road to driving clear, supportive and tailored to your needs. Whether you’re learning to drive for the first time, returning after a medical event, or exploring adaptive equipment, we guide you through every stage, from referral to licensing and beyond.
Our process is designed to empower your independence with expert care and personalised support.
Complete a referral online to provide us with the necessary information to ensure we can meet your needs. The referral can be submitted by you or someone on behalf of you, such as a family member, GP or Support Coordinator. If you’re ever unsure, you can contact us by phone or email to discuss our services.
We will send a service agreement for signing prior to commencing services. The service agreement outlines the terms and conditions of the service, including the responsibilities of each party and the costs associated.
The first part of any driving assessment is to complete a clinic-based assessment that we refer to as the off-road component. We complete this with you at your home, where we hope you will be most comfortable.
The off-road assessment evaluates the many skills that are important for driving. This includes vision, movement, strength, sensation, coordination, reaction time and cognitive functions. Here we will discuss your driving and medical history, needs and goals into the future.
The second part of the assessment is completed in our vehicle. Depending on the purpose of the assessment, this may include driving along a pre-defined route to assess your fitness to drive, passenger-only activities if considering potential to learn to drive or the trial of vehicle modifications in an appropriate environment.
Sometimes several on-road assessments are completed when trialling different forms of vehicle modifications
Following completion of the off and on-road assessment, a report will be written with recommendations. The report is typically sent to the Department of Transport, who will review the recommendations and make a final licensing decision.
Reporting may also include the completion of forms for funding bodies such as the NDIS to request funding to equip your vehicle with vehicle modifications.
Following the initial assessment phase, a period of capacity building may be offered to build driving capabilities. This will look different for everyone depending on their function, equipment needs and experience.
All capacity building follows a therapy model with goals and strategies that are developed collaboratively. We regularly measure progress and adapt the therapy plan according to the progress achieved.
A repeat on-road assessment and reporting may take place after capacity building. This is typically for people who have previously held a drivers licence and are seeking to return to driving using equipment or other rehabilitation.
We aim to support you through the whole process from the initial assessment to licensing and equipping your own vehicle with modifications as necessary.
