Fitness to drive assessments

Fitness to drive assessments evaluate whether it is safe for someone to continue to hold a drivers licence.

Assessing fitness to drive

These assessments are suitable for experienced drivers who have a disability or medical condition that may impair their capacity to drive. This includes individuals of an older age where there may be concerns due to a generalised decline in physical or cognitive abilities.

Fitness to drive assessments focus on determining whether the persons medical condition or disability is impairing their ability to drive.

What the fitness to drive assessments includes?

The fitness to drive assessments follow a standard format to ensure valid and reliable outcomes. We provide fitness to drive assessments in the one day for a total of $775.96. Additional travel charges may be applicable for travel. The assessment includes:

Off-road assessment:

The occupational therapist will complete a comprehensive assessment to evaluate your vision, movement, strength, sensation, coordination, reaction time and cognitive abilities.

The occupational therapist will gain an understanding of your medical and driving history, needs and goals moving forward. Several formal and informal assessments are completed to gather an understanding of your function relevant to driving.

On-road assessment:

You will complete this in a dual controlled vehicle. A Driving Instructor will also be present to provide direction. The drive will begin in a quiet residential area to provide familiarisation to the vehicle. The drive will then proceed through a standard route that encompasses typical driving demands to hold a WA drivers licence.

We follow a route that encompasses a variety of driving demands, as stipulated in the licensing and competency standards to ensure validity and reliability across all assessments.

Feedback:

Following the on-road assessment we will return to your home and discuss the recommendations.

Reporting:

A report with recommendations will be written following the assessment. A copy will be provided to you, the referring practitioner and the Department of Transport.
