Vehicle modification assessments determine whether modifications to the vehicle or other assistive technology (AT) may assist you drive, access or store your equipment safely.
These assessments are suitable for all future and existing drivers where there is a physical disability impacting ability to access or drive the vehicle. A vehicle modification could include any of the following, and much more:
Vehicle modifications may be funded by the NDIS, Job Access and other funding bodies providing they meet reasonable and necessary criteria stipulated in their operational guidelines.
These assessments follow a standard format although will be adapted to meet the need of the individual. Assessments for vehicle modifications are completed over several sessions depending on the type of equipment to be trialled.
Assessments for vehicle modifications begin at 12-hours ($2,327.88) including travel, direct and indirect services and reporting. They will be scaled based on the number and type of equipment trials required.
The driver trained occupational therapist will complete a comprehensive assessment to evaluate your vision, movement, strength, sensation, coordination, reaction time and cognitive abilities.
The occupational therapist will gain an understanding of your medical and driving history, needs and goals moving forward. Several formal and informal assessments are completed.
The occupational therapist will develop a shortlist of equipment to trial in the on-road assessment.
In most cases you will complete this in our dual controlled vehicle. In some cases, a trial will be necessary in a high-level wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) that requires hire from an equipment supplier.
Equipment is always trailed in a quiet and safe location. Several trials may be necessary to ensure the most appropriate equipment is identified according to your current and future function, and vehicle compatibility.
*Additional costs are associated with the hire/ use of a vehicle through equipment suppliers. These will be discussed with you if required, before proceeding.
An occupational therapy driving An occupational therapy driving assessment report with recommendations will be written following the assessment. A copy with be provided to you and any other relevant parties.

A telehealth session is scheduled after completion of the report to review the recommendations and begin the next steps, including implementation of a therapy plan if appropriate.
Occupational therapy capacity building typically follows an assessment of vehicle modifications, to increase skills to a licensing standard, gain the necessary conditions on your drivers licence and apply for funding to have the equipment fitted to your vehicle.
