Potential to drive assessments

Potential to drive assessments determine whether an individual with a disability has the capacity to gain a drivers licence.

Potential to drive assessments

The assessment supports the individual and family in identifying whether now is the right time to pursue leaning to drive or focus on other goals.

These assessments are suitable for all existing and aspiring learning drivers with a disability. You do not need to have a learners permit to complete this assessment, as activities in the vehicle are passenger-based. We do recommend that you are at-least 16 years.

Support to assist you with learning to drive may be funded through the NDIS if they meet reasonable and necessary criteria.

Access to funding in a NDIS plan such a specialised driver training typically requires completion of an occupational therapy driving assessment to determine eligibility.

What do potential to drive assessments look like?

Potential to drive assessments begin at 12-hours ($2,327.88) including travel, direct and indirect services and reporting. The assessment is conducted over 2 sessions.

Off-road assessment:

The driver trained occupational therapist will complete a comprehensive assessment to evaluate your vision, movement, strength, sensation, coordination, reaction time and cognitive abilities.

The occupational therapist will discuss your development of life skills that relate to driving. They will gain an understanding of your medical and driving history (if you have begun learning to drive), and your future driving aspirations and goals.

A combination of formal and informal assessments are completed to determine strengths and challenges that you may have with driving .

On-road assessment:

This is the fun part! You will complete several passenger-based activities in our vehicle. These passenger activities provide a practical assessment of the abilities assessed in the off-road assessment.

These activities are led by the driver trained occupational therapist and the parent/ guardian is encouraged to attend. Focusing on the driving environment can be tiring for the first time so the on-road assessment is sometimes split between 2sessions.

Reporting:

An occupational therapy driving assessment report with recommendations will be written following the assessment.

Discussion:

A telehealth session is scheduled after completion of the report to review the recommendations and begin the next steps, including implementation of a therapy plan if appropriate.

Occupational therapy capacity building typically follows potential to drive assessments, if learning to drive is recommended.
