Vision assessment for driving

Vision plays a critical role in safe driving. As part of your occupational therapy driving assessment, your vision will be screened in-line with the standards necessary to hold a drivers licence. Sometimes we will require you to complete a more thorough vision assessment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

When do I need to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist?

During your occupational therapy driving assessment, your therapist will evaluate your visual acuity, eye movements, and visual fields to ensure they meet the minimum standards necessary for driving. These standards are defined by Austroads.

In some cases, if you have a known visual condition or if the evaluation completed by the Occupational Therapist raises concerns, we may request a formal report from an optometrist or ophthalmologist to proceed with your assessment.

You will need to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist before your occupational therapy driving assessment if you have any of the following:

  • Binocular visual acuity worse than 6/12 with correction
  • Any significant visual impairment (e.g. Hemianopia, Quadrantanopia, or changes from Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration)
  • Monocular vision (vision in only one eye)
  • Diplopia (double vision)

These conditions may affect your ability meet visual standards for driving in Australia, and require specialised evaluation to ensure road safety and compliance.

Next steps

If your therapist identifies concerns during your occupational therapy driving assessment, we will pause the process until you’ve completed a more thorough evaluation with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

This process ensures that all vision-related factors are properly considered before determining your fitness to drive.
